So simple

So simple is a song by LorD and Master. It appears on the album Pensive and takes a look at the isolation one feels growing up as a gay man in Dan's own experience and the reasons behind that isolation. Section 28, a law enacted by Margaret Thatcher's government in the 1980s forbade the "promotion" of homosexuality as a "pretended family relationship". The outcome was that, for fear of contravening this law, homosexuality was not mentioned in any school curriculum, making LGBTQ+ pupils feel totally alone. Many members of the LGBTQ+ community in the UK who were brought up in this period still carry the scars of this legislation whose minimal wording was considered so simple.
Lyrics
So simple, yet so effective An unconditioned set of views Don’t be maudlin nor reflective It’s not by accident: you choose You choose to be this way, I swear it This is what I have been taught By those whose men seek to impair it A fight we never should have fought It’s so simple, yet so effective Isolation is the key Without a friend, we are selective And education is the enemy You could be the only one, I swear it This is what you have been taught It’s not true, but if the shoe fits, wear it Then the fight never will be fought
