"A midnight dreary" is a song by LorD and Master from the album, Definitely. It's about a lonely, strange man living in a manor house high above a village. Nobody understands him or why he's so sad, but he stares into a fire, wishing he could make them understand him. Loosely inspired by The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, this song runs the raven's word "nevermore" through a vocoder, in an echo of the Shakespeare-through-a-vocoder fun of "Cold sweat".

Lyrics

Once upon a midnight dreary
I stumbled on the soundest theory
I gazed into the open fire
And wondered why

I posed my thoughts as a query
Once upon a midnight dreary
I gazed into the open fire
For quite some time

Why do they fear me?
Why don’t they hear me?
I can see it all so clearly
On a midnight dreary

Sometimes my shadow moves without me
No one knows a thing about me
The flickering of the open fire
Dances on the wall

Once upon a midnight dreary
I found myself with no one near me
I gazed into the open fire
And cursed them all

Nevermore
Nevermore
Nevermore
Nevermore
