A plague doctor mask is an item of clothing popularly attributed to the era of the Black Death in 17th century Europe.

The plague doctor would adorn the mask with its characteristic long beak, which would be stuffed with posies of fragrant herbs, which was incorrectly thought to purify the air, when the bubonic plague was believed to be an airborne illness.

LorD and Master adopted the plague doctor mask for the first nine albums, revealing his face for the first time on an album cover for Redux in 2012, after three years of hiding behind the beak.
