Up
Up is an album by LorD and Master. The album was written between January and May 2017 and was produced using Apple's Logic Pro X software. Release date: 8 September 2017.
Concept
Up's concept was simple: to make a pure synthpop album using new vocal effects and synths, with particular nods to vocoders and extreme auto-tuning techniques. Each of the songs has a two-word title, so in a way, the album is a spiritual successor to Univerbose. The songs form a sort-of narrative that details falling in love, but that love is ruined by jealousy and mistrust. Most of the songs are devoid of sampled instruments, using pure software synthesis instead; the final track being the exception, as it employs sampled orchestral strings. This is to ease the listener back to other, more sample-heavy albums.
In terms of visual art, Peter Nugent decided that the best way to represent the music's synthier feel was to use a pixel-art format. The album artwork features LorD and Master holding onto a red balloon, floating through a videogame-esque landscape that is reminiscent of Terraria. The LorD and Master character is also holding, in his other hand, the plague doctor mask that he wore for a number of years in pictures and artworks. The artwork for the EP packages reflected the themes of the songs' titles and retained the pixel-art theme.
